The best part of infusing cannabis into a BBQ sauce is the number of dishes you can slather in rich, buttery BBQ sauce. Please be prepared for the number of times we’re going to use extravagant descriptive words like delicious, and scrumptious. That’s a joke, but we did put together an (in our opinion) incredible go-to cannabis-infused BBQ sauce for you that will meet all your sauce needs this barbecue season.
When it comes to edibles, it’s important to pay attention to the potency of the product you’re using. In these BBQ recipes, we are using our canna-butter recipe. The chart below shows the simple equation to calculating potency and helps you choose an appropriate dose. If you’re going to make cannabis-infused butter specifically for these BBQ sauces then you can control the amount of cannabis is infused, or if you have butter already made, you can decide if you need to substitute regular butter as well so your dose is not too strong.
If you’re a beginner cannabis cook and this is one of the first times you’re going to be making, and consuming your own edibles, we suggest our first recipe. This recipe, while delicious and effective, has a lower dose, so you don't have to skimp on the sauce and you will still get an enjoyable high. This recipe creates roughly two cups of warm, delicious cannabis-infused BBQ sauce. It’s up to you if you choose to use the whole two cups in one meal, but to calculate your individual dose, for each serving, divide your total percentage of THC into the amount of servings you have.
For Example: If your BBQ sauce has 100MG of THC in it, and you are BBQing 4 racks of ribs, each rack will have approximately 25 MG of THC on them.
Beginner Cannabis BBQ Sauce:
2 cups ketchup
⅓ cup apple cider vinegar
2 tbsp yellow mustard
1 tsp freshly-squeezed lemon juice
½ cup packed brown sugar
1 tbsp. onion salt
1 tsp. chili powder
1 tsp. celery seed
1 tsp. ground cumin
1 tsp. black pepper
1 tsp. garlic powder
1 tsp. cayenne
4 tbsp cannabis-infused butter*
*cool your cannabis butter and cut into cubes this creates a silky-smooth texture later on. Remember to check your dose.
Step one, mixing the perfect ratio:
On medium, heat combine the ketchup, mustard, lemon juice, sugar and vinegar in a pan. You can play around with this ratio if you would like, more ketchup makes your BBQ sauce sweeter, while different ratios of mustard and vinegar can make your sauce more runny or tangy, just taste it for personal preference.
Step two, season the sauce:
Add your spices and cook your mixture down for around 10 minutes or until the aroma is strong and your sauce is lightly bubbling. Feel free to laugh madly as the sauce bubbles, and contemplate a future as a witch.
Step three, canna-butter time:
Add in your cooled, cubed, cannabis-infused butter and reduce the heat. Slowly stirring in the butter cubes is what gives this BBQ sauce a great texture and allows the cannabis to slowly infuse with no risk of burning off.
Step four, thick or thin the time is now:
Let your BBQ sauce slowly simmer and thicken to your desired consistency for 5-10 minutes. Remove from heat and serve!
Sauce making is an art of its own, so use these measurements as general guidelines, if you enjoy spice, add some more cayenne, taste your mixture often, and add your ingredients slowly, this way you don't get caught wishing you left something out.
Advanced Cannabis Infused BBQ Sauce:
This cannabis-infused BBQ sauce is easy to make, but we call it advanced due to the larger amount of cannabis butter used. Remember, use the chart above to dose your butter appropriately, this way you can enjoy all of the sauce, and the appropriate high.
8 tbsp cannabis-infused butter
½ cup onion, finely chopped
½ cup ketchup
¼ cup firmly packed light brown sugar
1 ½ teaspoon chili powder
3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon salt
⅛ teaspoon pepper
1 dash Tabasco sauce
Step one, canna-butter and onions:
On medium-low heat, melt your cannabis-infused butter in the pan and add your finely chopped onions.
Step two, toss it all in and hope for the best:
Add in all other ingredients and simmer on low heat for 6 minutes.
Step three, all done:
Serve, or store in the fridge to use later on, remember to CLEARLY label the container with a warning about the cannabis content.
Limiting the amount of heat the cannabis-infused butter is exposed to helps ensure that the cannabinoids THC and CBD don’t burn off, maximizing your potential high.
